Use os retalhos | Use your scraps

Tenho este hábito (ainda não sei se bom ou mau...) de guardar todos os bocadinho de tecido que sobram dos projetos que faço. Tenho, por isso, uma caixa cheia de bocadinhos de tecido e não é fácil ver-me livre deles. Não os posso deitar fora... Às vezes consigo utilizar retalhos em alguns projetos como este saco ou este estojo, mas nem sempre é fácil.

Desta vez, lembrei-me de fazer um marcador de páginas. É muito fácil de fazer! É também uma ideia engraçada para fazer com os miúdos! Ora vejam.

I have this habit (I still don't know if it's a good or a bad one) of saving all the tiny bits of fabric from the projects I make. So I have this box full of fabric scraps and it's not easy to get rid of them. I can't throw them out... Sometimes I use fabric scraps to make some projects like this bag or this pencil case, but it's not always easy.

This time, I decided to make a bookmark. It´s very easy! It's also a good idea to make with the kids! Let's see.

Material: 

2 retângulos de papel forte | 2 rectangles of strong paper

1 pedaço de tecido | 1 small piece of fabric

tesoura e cola | cutter and glue

1 pedaço de fio | a small string

Na parte de trás de um dos retângulos desenha-se a figura que se quer. Eu desenhei uma borboleta. É necessário ter cuidado para que a figura não fique muito perto das margens para haver espaço para colar o tecido.

Corta-se a figura e põe-se cola para colar o tecido. O tecido deve ser colocado com a parte da frente virada para baixo. 

Deixa-se secar durante algum tempo e depois cola-se o outro retângulo de papel para tapar a parte de trás do marcador. O marcador fica mais direitinho se for colocado em baixo de algum objeto pesado para secar.

On the back of one of the rectangles draw the picture you want. I drew a butterfly. You need to be careful not to cut the picture too near to the edge. You need some space to glue the fabric.

Cut out the shape and put some glue to hold the fabric. The fabric should be facing down.

Let it dry for some time and then glue the other paper rectangle so you can cover the back of the bookmark.

You'l,l have a better finish if you put something heavy on top of the bookmark and let it dry.

Depois de bem seco, é necessário fazer um furo na parte de cima do marcador para colocar o fio. Escolhi um fio com a cor semelhante à do papel mas podia ser vermelho para combinar com o tecido. Também arredondei os cantos. E está pronto a ser usado.

When it's dry, you'll need to make a hole in the top of the bookmark to put the string. I chose one that has a similar color to the paper but a red one would be nice too. I also rounded the corners. And it's ready to use.

Cabides | Hangers

Ontem comprei estes cabides numa loja aqui em Díli. Têm um ar de azulejo português antigo que me agrada muito. Não tenho nenhuma parede suficientemente bonita para os colocar mas gostei tanto deles...

Yesterday I bought these hangers in a store here in Díli.  They have this old portuguese tile look that I really like. I don't have a good enough wall to hang them but I just liked them so much....

Tingir tecido | Fabric dyeing

Experimentei pela primeira vez esta técnica. Há muito que tinha comprado o pó para fazer a tinta mas andei sempre a adiar a coisa. Não segui exatamente as instruções. Misturei o pó com alguma água a ferver e coloquei um pouco de sal. Os tecidos mais escuros ficaram meia hora dentro da tinta e os mais claros apenas quinze minutos. O tecido verde ficou dentro da tinta algum tempo. Depois subi uma parte do tecido e deixei estar mais um pouco. Fiz o mesmo processo mais uma vez e acabei por ficar com três camadas com tonalidades diferentes.

E já que estava com a mão na massa, experimentei também tingir com chá. Fiz da mesma forma: água a ferver, sal e sacos de chá. Coloquei o tecido lá dentro cerca de meia hora. Na fotografia não se nota bem a cor mas ficou com um ar envelhecido que me agrada. Usei os tecidos que tinha imprimido na impressora. Algumas imagens ficaram um pouco desfocadas por causa da água estar tão quente.

No fim, lavei bem os tecido para tirar a tinta excedente e deixei estar um pouco em água fria e vinagre.

Experimentem! É divertido...

It was the first time that I've tried this technique. I bought some ink powder a long time ago but never used it. I didn't follow the instruction exacly. I just mix the powder with very hot water and some salt. The darker fabric was in the water for half an hour and the lighter one stayed there for about fifteen minutes. The green fabric was in the water for some time. Then I pulled some of it up and let it stay for some time. After that I pulled it up again and ended up with three different tones in the same fabric.

And as I were there, I decided to try dyeing with tea. The process is the same. Just mix hot water, salt and the tea. I let the fabric in the water for half an hour. You can't see very well in the picture but it ended up with a nice vintage tone that I really like. I used the fabric that I had printed in the printer. Some of the images ended up a litlle blur because of the hot water.

After this, I rinse the fabric really well in running water and then put them in some water with vinagre to set the colour.

Play around a bit! It's fun...

A Menina Gotinha de Água

A Menina Gotinha de Água é um clássico do autor português Papiniano Carlos. Lembro-me de ler este poema na escola primária e, estes dias, encontrei uma versão de 1972. Um verdadeiro clássico! O mais engraçado são as ilustrações feitas por João da Câmara Leme. Não sei quem é, mas achei graça às ilustrações com apontamentos escandinavos que agora estão tanto na moda.

A Menina Gotinha de Água (The little water drop, in a free translation!) is a classic of the portuguese author Papiniano Carlos. I remember reading this poem in the primary school and, one of these days, I found a version from 1972. A true classic! I really enjoyed the pictures from the illustrator João da Câmara Leme. I've never heard of him but it's funny that the pictures have this scandinavian tone that is so up to date.

Então, decidi fazer algumas versões destes desenhos. Pode ser que tenham algum uso, um dia.

So I've decided to make some versions of these pictures. Maybe someday they'll come in handy.

Impressões em tecido | Fabric printing

Há quase um mês que não escrevo nada no blog. Tenho reparado que as horas do dia não são suficientes para fazer tudo o que quero/ devo/ tenho que fazer (perdoem-me a gramática)! 

Seja como for, no meio de tanta coisa, a inspiração não anda nos melhores dias. Ontem decidi experimentar uma técnica que vi no Pinterest: imprimir em tecido usando a impressora. Parece um bocadinho estranho mas o facto é que resulta. 

Usei fita cola para colar um pedaço de tecido ligeiramente mais pequeno que um folha A4. Depois configurei a impressora para imprimir em cartolina (foi a maior gramagem que encontrei). Depois é só imprimir. É muito importante que o tecido esteja bem esticado no papel para não encravar. 

Ainda não sei bem o que vou fazer com estas impressões mas logo penso em alguma coisa. Eu usei desenhos meus mas podem utilizar qualquer desenho que encontrem na web. Experimentem!  Podem ver tutoriais aqui e aqui.

It's been almost a month since I last posted a message in the blog. I've been noticing that the hours of the day aren't enough for all the things I want/ must/ have to do!

Anyway, my inspiration has seen batter days. Yesterday I decided to try a tecnique that I saw on Pinterest: use a printer to print on fabric. it's sounds scarry but it actually works.

I used some tape to stick a piece of fabric to an A4 paper sheet. The fabric has to be a bit smaller than the paper sheet and it's important that the fabric is well ironed so it won't jam the printer.

I still don't know what I'll make with these prints but I'll think of something. I used my own drawings but you can use any kind  of pictures you find on the web. Just try! You can see some tutorials here and here.

Novo ano | New year

Este ano iniciou com dois pequenos projetos: um para casa e outro para mim.

Fiz umas almofadas que há muito estavam prometidas e um colar com fios de crochet enrolados numa corda.

Aqui ficam. Bom ano para todos!

E temos uns sofás novos!

This year began with two small projects: one for our house and another for me.

I made pillows that have been promissed for a long time and a necklace made with crochet thread.

Here they are. A happy new year to all!

Saco multiusos | Tote bag

Quem não precisa de um saco para levar o que quer que seja? É sempre bom ter à mão um destes! Gostei muito do resultado deste em particular por causa das cores. Ficou fresquinho...

Who doesn't need a bag to carry anything we want? It's always good to have one of these arround! I love the final result of this one specially because of the colors. It's fresh...

Estojo de desenho | Drawing kit

Estes estojos foram para a mesma pessoa que encomendou os blocos e as cobras. Desta vez consegui planear melhor o esjojo e acho que ficou mais arrumadinho do que o primeiro que fiz há uns tempos para a Noa. Espero que os meninos gostem.

These kits are going to the same person that asked me for the blocks and the snakes. This time I managed to make a better plan of the kit and I think it turned out better than the one I made some time ago for Noa. I hope the kids enjoy it.

Cobras | Snakes

Estas cobras foram feitas com uma mistura de vários tecidos. Na cauda, coloquei um guizo para fazer barulho.

These snakes were made with several pieces of  fabric. In the tail, I put a small bell to make some noise.
