O que fazer com a arte dos miúdos | What to do with the kids art

A maioria das coisas que a Francisca e o Tomás pintam ficam guardadas numa pasta. Mas há outras que podem ficar penduradas na parede ou podem servir para enfeitar presentes ou até para fazer uma grinalda.

Most of the things that Francisca and Tomás paint are stored in a file. But some things can be hanged on the wall or be used to embellish a gift or to make a garland.

Dou-vos o exemplo destes peixes que eles pintaram. É claro que pintaram à maneira deles mas, depois de secar, decidi voltar a contornar o desenho e recortar os peixinhos.

I give you this example. They painted a fish that I draw. They still can't respect the line limits so, after the paint was dried, I traced the fishes again and cut them. 

Com o papel que sobrou do recorte e que também estava pintado, fiz estas bolas com o cortador. Servirão para fazer uma grinalda mas também para enfeitar presentes ou para decorar a parede.

With the paper that was left, and that was also painted, I used a circular cutter to make circles. They'll be used to make a garland but they can also be used to close a wrapping or to decorate the walls.

Um desafio | A challenge

Uma das coisas que mais gosto de fazer com os bebés, pelo menos em teoria, é brincar com tintas e massas e coisas assim. E digo em teoria porque quando estou a planear o que vou fazer, parece-me sempre tudo muito bem e acho que vai correr sempre tudo como eu planeei. Mas, na verdade, são poucas as vezes em que isso acontece. O que acontece é eles não fazerem o que eu pretendo ou não acharem que um brinquedo qualquer é mais interessante que o que estou a tentar fazer ou pegarem nos materiais e fazerem tudo menos o que eu quero!

One of the things I like to do with my toddlers is, in theory, play around with paint and dough and things like that.  And I say in theory because when I'm planning something, everything seems easy and I always think it's going to work really well. But, to tell you the truth, that doesn't usually happen. What happens is the kids not doing what I propose or thinking that some toy is funnier than the activity or taking the material and doing everything with it except what I want!

Foi o que aconteceu esta semana quando me lembrei de fazer colagens num ovo de papel. A ideia era que eles rasgassem pedaços de papel de seda, e aqui eu já contava que os rasgassem pedaços grandes, mas o que aconteceu foi que eles amassaram o papel em vez de o rasgarem… Ok, então rasguei eu o papel com a pouca ajuda deles. Depois de estarem os bocadinhos rasgados, eles acharam que seria divertido atirar os papelinhos para o ar e atiraram (algumas vezes, devo dizer…).

That's what happened this week when I thought of making a collage in some paper eggs. My idea was for them to rip some paper in pieces, and I was counting on some big pieces already, but they smashed the paper instead… ok, so I rip the paper with some help from them. And when those pieces of paper were all done they thought it would be nice to throw them in the air and they did ( a few times, I must say!).

Quando consegui apanhar os papéis, sentei-os na mesa e dei a cada um deles um ovo desenhado numa folha. Espalhei cola nos ovos e queria que eles colocassem dentro os pedaços de papel. Pensei que iam achar divertido por ficarem com as mãos pegajosas, que normalmente gostam, mas consegui tê-los atentos por cerca de três minutos. O resultado é este… uns ovinhos um bocadinho despidos para o meu gosto.

When I managed to gather the pieces of paper, I sat them at the table and gave each one a sheet with the drawing of an egg. I put some glue on it and I wanted them to stick the pieces of paper inside the egg. I thought they would like because their hands would be sticky, which they like, but I only got about three minutes of their attention. This is the result… some slightly uncovered eggs.

E é esta a anatomia de uma atividade artística com as minhas crianças. Li uma vez num artigo que não devemos criar expectativas quando planeamos um projeto com as crianças e que devemos estar preparados para o facto de eles não fazerem nada do que pretendemos. Parece que é mesmo assim…

Vale a ideia de que eles se divertiram e ficam os ovos meios despidos a alegrar a sala.

At least I got the idea that they had some fun and I got the uncovered eggs to brighten up the room.

Plasticina e ovos | Playdough and eggs

E como estamos perto da Páscoa, fiz estes ovos para usar como tapetes de plasticina. A ideia é imprimir e laminar os ovos para que as crianças possam cobrir os espaços brancos com plasticina. Usei algumas formas diferentes mas simples, já que a Francisca e o Tomás ainda são bebés e ainda não têm a motricidade fina muito desenvolvida.

As Easter is near, I made these eggs to use as playdough mats. The idea is to cut and laminate the eggs so the kids can fill the white spaces with playdough. I used different but simple shapes because Francisca and Tomás are still little and their fine motor skills are not so good yet.

Fiz o teste ontem à noite e eles gostaram. Eu fiz as cobrinhas e as bolinhas e eles forma colocando no lugar. É uma atividade que precisa de algum acompanhamento, pelo menos nas primeiras vezes.

Last evening I made the test and they enjoyed it. I made the snakes and the balls with the playdough and they put them in place. This is an activity that needs the presence of an adult, at least the first couple of times.

Keep calm and... a bird

Gosto muito deste poster que se vê em todo o lado. Procurei a origem e fiquei a gostar ainda mais. A frase foi criada pelo governo de Inglaterra durante a II Guerra Mundial para animar o espírito das pessoas. Ao que parece, a frase não foi muito publicitada e só em 2000 é que descobriram um original. Depois de descoberto o poster, voltou a ser publicado por uma empresa e foi o sucesso que sabemos.
E porque aqui é difícil conseguir comprar o que quer que seja, fiz esta versão pessoal do poster, ou melhor, fiz quatro versões, em cores diferentes. Usei um passarinho meu em vez da coroa. Está disponível para download aqui, para quem gostar.

I really like this poster that you see everywhere. I searched for the origin of it and I liked it even more. The poster was created in England during World War II to lift the spirit of the British. It seems that it wasn't very popular at the time and only in 2000 did they find an original. After that, a company published it again and it was a hit. 
And, as it's hard to find nice things like that things around here, I made my own version of the poster, or better, my own four versions of the poster in different colors. I used one of my birds instead of the traditional crown. If you like it, it's available for download here.

Lata das bolachas | Cookie can

Comecei a preparar esta lata há muito tempo mesmo. Era uma lata de bolachas que depois ficou a servir para guardar outras bolachas. Mas como os desenhos não eram muito bonitos, achei que ficava melhor pintada de novo.
Primeiro pintei com spray branco algumas vezes, até os desenhos não se notarem. Depois de deixar secar muito bem, fiz uma medições para obter este padrão em zig zag e colei fita nas linhas para pintar com rosa. Para a tampa, e depois de tentar fazer uma coisa diferente sem grande resultado, pintei apenas com várias camadas de branco.
Gosto muito do resultado! Experimentem! É sempre bom aproveitar o que já temos em casa.

I started working on this can a long time ago. It was a cookie can that was used also to keep other cookies. But it had some not so beautiful drawing so I thought that it was best to paint it again.
So first I spray painted it several times in white, to cover the drawings. I let it dry for a long time. Then I measured it to make this zigzag pattern and put some masking tape on the lines so I could use the pink color. I had some trouble whit the lid and after some unsuccessful experiences, I just painted it plain white.
I really like how it turned out! Give it a try! It's great to use things that you have in the house and give it a new use.

Bom aroma | Good aroma

Há pouco tempo vi no site The Burlap Bag uma receita muito simples para um tirar os maus cheiros da casa. É só necessário bicarbonato de sódio e umas gotas de essência. Coloca-se num frasco e está feito. Eu decidi usar essência de alfazema e, como tinha um bocadinho de alfazema seca, juntei também ao preparado.

A while ago I saw at The Burlap Bag site a recipe to neutralize bad smells from the house. You just need baking soda and an essence of some kind. Just put it in a mason jar and you're done. I used lavender essence and I had some dried lavender so I just added some to the mix.

Usei um frasco arredondado que tinha e trabalhei a tampa para servir o propósito. Primeiro, fiz furos com um prego. Não ficaram perfeitos mas não tinha um berbequim para fazer melhor. Depois pintei a tampa com spray. O frasco ficou bonito e assim pode ser colocado num local visível, mesmo com o preparado lá dentro.

I used a round mason jar and worked a little on the lid. I made some holes with a nail. I don't have a driller so they don't look perfect. Then I spray painted it. The mason jar looks good enough to be in a room, in a visible spot.

Mochila às bolinhas | Dotty backpack

A mochila da Francisca estragou-se. Fiz esta com um dos meus tecidos favoritos. Não foi muito fácil de fazer mas gostei muito do resultado final. O esquema para a mochila pode ser descarregado carregando nas imagens, se quiserem experimentar. No esquema não coloquei as alças porque utilizei uma fita larga e resistente. A mochila é pequenina, tem cerca de 25 cm de altura, mas tem bastante espaço no interior. Leva fraldas, toalhetes, uma muda de roupa e o lanche. Tudo pronto para a escolinha... 

O tamanho pode variar se fizerem uma cópia num tamanho maior do que A4. Experimentem e boas costuras!

O esquema é para uso pessoal, por favor.

Francisca's backpack wore out. I've made this one in with one of my favorite fabrics. It wasn't very easy to sew but I really like how it ended up. The pattern for the backpack can be downloaded by clicking the images, if you want to try. There're no straps in the pattern because I used some large ribbon I had. It's a small backpack, about 25 cm tall, but it enough to carry diapers, baby wipes, a change of clothes and the morning snack. All set for kindergarten...

Size may be changed if you print the pattern in a bigger size than A4. Give it a go and happy sewing!

A parte de baixo e a parte do fecho cosem-se primeiro e só depois se unem as partes da frente e de trás. 

Here are some more pictures of the backpack. The bottom and the zipper pieces are sewn together first. Only then you sew the front and the back pieces.

Pauzinhos de gelado | Ice cream sticks

Há muito tempo atrás comprei uma série de pauzinhos de gelado para ajudar os meus alunos nas contas de matemática. Um destes dias lembrei-me deles e coloquei-os numa caixa para a Francisca e o Tomás poderem brincar com eles. Como eles gostaram da brincadeira, fiz quatro cartões com figuras para eles seguirem o padrão.

A long time ago, I bought these ice cream sticks to help my students in their math tasks. One of these days I remembered I had them and put them in a box so Francisca and Tomás could play with them. They enjoyed playing with the sticks so I made these sequence cards for them to follow the pattern.

Coroa de feltro | Felt crown

Ontem foi a festa de Carnaval na escolinha do pequenos. Em cima da hora, lá fui comprar umas asas de borboleta para a Francisca mas é sempre difícil encontrar coisas para rapazes. Fiz, então, esta coroa para o Tomás, aproveitando o facto de ele adorar chapéus e na esperança de querer usá-la. A minha máquina ficou sem agulhas (parti-as todas...) e tive que coser tudo à mão. Não é nada difícil, mesmo para quem não percebe nada de costura manual como eu. Aqui fica o tutorial.

Yesterday was Carnaval Day at the kid's school. I went to buy some buterfly wings for Francisca but it's very hard to find anything for boys. So I've made this crown for Tomás. He likes hats a lot and I was hoping he would wear the crown for some time. My machine ran out of needles (I've broken them all) so I had to hand sew it. It's really not that hard, even for someone that is a dummie at hand sewing like me. Here's the tutorial.

• Medir a cabeça e cortar um retângulo com mais três cm do que a medida; com um lápis, fazer o desenho da coroa.
• Costurar pela linha com um ponto simples (usei aquele que vai para cima e para baixo e fica uma linha tracejada). na parte de baixo fiz mais três linhas com um tracejado maior.
• Colar pompons coloridos nas pontas da coroa.
• Colar velcro nas extremidades para fechar a coroa.

• Measure the head and cut a rectangle giving it 3 cm more than what you've measured; trace the crown with a pencil.
• Sew trough the line with a simple stitch (I used the one that goes up and down leaving a hatched line). On the bottom of the crown I made three more hatched lines.
• Glue the pompons in the edges.
• Stick some Velcro to close the crown.
