Uma grinalda é sempre especial | A garland is always special

Gosto muito de receber presentes feitos à mão. Têm um significado especial, têm o tempo e a dedicação de quem os fez. Este projeto que vos trago hoje pode ser feito por qualquer um, mesmo pelas pessoas que acham que não têm jeito para as artes manuais. É uma ideia muito bonita para um bebé ou para quem goste de coisas delicadas.

I love handmade gifts. They have a special meaning, they carry the time and dedication of the one that made them. The project that I share today is very simple and even the ones that aren't so good with hand work can make it. It's a beautiful idea for a baby gift or for someone that loves delicate things.

Fiz duas grinaldas: uma em rosa e a outra em roxo. Usei papel de embrulho para fazer círculos com um cortador circular. É uma ferramenta muito útil para ser ter à mão. Se não tiverem um, podem cortar os círculos com uma tesoura. O papel de embrulho é ótimo para este tipo de projeto: é barato, tem padrões bonitos e diferentes e encontra-se facilmente em qualquer lado.

I made two garland: one in pink and the other one in purple. I used wrapping paper to make circles with a puncher. This is a very useful tool to have around. If you don't have one, you can cut circles with scisors. Wrapping paper is the best for this kind of project: it's cheap, it has nice and diferent patterns and it's easy to find in any store.

Escolhi dois padrões diferentes para cada uma das grinaldas. Depois, arranjei fio nos mesmos tons e colei os círculos dois a dois com o fio no meio. O processo repete-se, alternando os padrões e deixando um espaço entre cada par de círculos.
A grinalda pode ter o comprimento que se quiser. As minhas tinham quinze pares de círculos em cada, e ficaram com cerca de 2.5 metros.

I chose two matching patterns for each garland. Then, I got some thread in same tones and glue the circle together with the thread inside. Repeat the process, alternating the patterns and leaving some space between each pair of circles.
You can make the garland as long as you want. Mine had fifteen pairs of circles each, about 2.5 meters.

Jogo de triangem | Sorting game

Fiz este jogo para a Francisca e o Tomás a partir de um jogo daqueles a sério que vi na escola. A ideia é seguir a sequência de imagens dada por cada cartão. Fiz oito cartões-padrão diferentes e escolhi seis imagens com cores diferentes. Assim, para além da perceção visual da imagem, têm também que relacionar as cores.

Usei imagens de coisas que eles conhecem e nomeiam para o jogo ser mais apelativo. Acho que eles gostaram e compreenderam a ideia. Como tudo o resto, é difícil manter-los entretidos durante muito tempo mas fiquei contente por se interessarem. A Francisca conseguiu fazer três cartões mas teve dificuldade em distinguir o vermelho e o laranja. O Tomás fez um... Fiquei contente!

Se gostaram da ideia, podem fazer o download aqui. É só imprimir, cortar e laminar. Não se esqueçam de arredondar os cantos depois de laminar.

I made this game for Francisca and Tomás inspired in a real game that I saw at school. The idea is to follow the sequence of the images given by the pattern card. I made eight pattern cards and chose six images in different colors. This way, they have to associate the images and also the colors.

I used images that they are familiar with to make the game more appealing. I think they enjoyed it and understood the idea. As always, it's hard to keep their attention for a long period of time but I was happy that they were interested. Francisca was able to complete three cards but she had a hard time with the red and orange. Tomás did one card... I was happy!

Jogo de associação de cores | Color matching game

Fiz um jogo para associar cores, aproveitando a ideia do gelado e dos pauzinhos. O processo é muito fácil e acho que pode ser feito mesmo sem máquina de costura.
Usei feltro de várias cores e pintei uma das extremidades dos pauzinhos com as mesmas cores do feltro.
Para coser os gelados, dobrei o feltro em dois, segurei com alfinetes e desenhei o padrão. Só depois de coser é que cortei os gelados. É mais fácil assim.
É necessário deixar uma abertura ligeiramente maior que a largura do pauzinho na parte de baixo.

I've made this color matching game with pretend ice pops and sticks. It's very easy to make and I think you can make it, even if you don't have a sewing machine.
I used felt in several colors and I painted one of the edges of the sticks with the same color as the felt.
To sew the ice pops, I folded the felt, pin it and drew the pattern. I sew the pops first and I cut them after. It's easier this way.
you need to leave an opening slightly bigger than the stick on the bottom of the pop.

Para quem não tem máquina de costura, acho que é fácil coser-se à mão. Demora mais tempo mas fica bem.
Depois é só brincar! Espero que gostem!

For those who don't have a sewing machine, I think it's easy to hand sew the ice pops. It'll take a bit longer but it'll look good.

Como colorir arroz | How to color rice

Brincar com arroz é um bom exercício sensorial para estimular os sentidos e é também muito divertido! Para tornar a brincadeira mais engraçada, o ideal é dar cor ao arroz. E isto é muito fácil de fazer!

Playing with rice is a great sensory exercise to stimulate the senses and it's also fun!
To make it more interesting, you can give some color to the rice. And that's very easy to make!

Para além do arroz, é necessário álcool etílico e corantes de várias cores. Também é necessário um frasco e folhas de papel vegetal.
O processo é simples:
1. Enche-se 3/4 de um frasco com arroz;
2. Coloca-se algumas gotas de corante da cor pretendida;
3. Rega-se com um pouco de álcool;
4. Fecha-se o frasco e abana-se até a cor ficar uniforme.
5. Estende-se o arroz numa folha de papel vegetal até secar.

Besides rice, you'll need rubbing alcohol and food coloring. You'll also need a mason jar and some cookie sheets.
The process is quite simple:
1. Fill 3/4 of the mason jar with rice;
2. Put some drops of food coloring in it;
3. Add a few drops of rubbing alcohol;
4. Close the jar and shake until the color is even;
5. Put the rice on a cookie sheet to dry.

A Francisca e o Tomás gostaram muito da caixa com arroz e gostaram ainda mais de o espalhar pelo chão! Ficou colorido, sim, mas deu uma trabalheira a limpar. Ainda não voltei a dar-lhes a caixa para brincar...
Há outras formas de fazer arroz colorido mas acho que esta é a mais prática. Para se fazer outra cor, basta lavar o frasco e começar o processo de início. Assim não se gastam sacos de plástico desnecessariamente.

Francisca and Tomás loved the rice box and they really enjoyed throwing the rice in the floor! It looked really pretty but I had a lot of work cleaning the mess. I haven't given them the box since...
There are other ways of coloring rice but I think that this one is very easy. To make another color, you just have to wash the mason jar and do it all over again.

Bandeirinhas | Little bunting

Gosto de coisas simples e coloridas. O bolo de aniversário da Francisca e do Tomás era branco com uma volta de bolinhas coloridas. Para o alegrar fiz uma fiada de bandeirinhas coloridas que prendi a dois pauzinhos e que ficaram a decorar o bolo. Em cada pauzinho colei uma fotografia deles com uns chapéus de festa.
É muito simples fazer bandeirinhas triangulares. Usei papel de origami por teres cores mais vivas. Só é necessário o papel, um fio e cola.

I like simple and colorful things. Francisca and Tomás's birthday cake was white with a trim of colored little balls. To brighten it up, I made a bunting of small colorful flags that were tied to sticks to stand on the cake. On each one of the sticks I put a picture of them in party hats.
It's very easy to make a bunting. I used origami paper because it has bright colors. You only need paper, some thread and glue.

Primeiro, dobra-se a folha ao meio e cortam-se triângulos.
Ficamos com um losango; colocamos cola e o fio na parte de dentro.
Dobra-se o losango e fica o triângulo preso no fio.
Continua-se até alcançar o tamanho desejado.

First, fold the sheet in half and cut some triangles.
You'll get kite shapes; put some glue and the thread in the shape.
Fold the kite and you'll get a triangle hanged on the thread.
Keep going until you reach the size you want.

Acho que as bandeirinhas são muito festivas. Estas são em tamanho mini mas pode-se fazer em tamanho normal, bastando para isso dobrar o quadrado da folha de origami na diagonal para obter um triângulo. O resto é igual. Espero que gostem!

I think buntings are very festive. These are a mini version but it's easy to make it in a normal size. You just have to fold the origami sheets in a diagonal to make a triangle. Then you just proceed the same way. I hope you enjoy it!

Construir uma casa Montessori | Building a Montessori home

Como já disse outras vezes, gosto muito da filosofia Montessori. Gosto da ideia da organização e da independência que isso dá às crianças, do facto de a descoberta ser feita em contexto e com sentido e gosto da simplicidade que prevalece. Gosto enquanto professora e mais enquanto mãe.

Mas, ao contrário do que se lê em muitos blogues, acho que não é muito fácil implementar o método em casa, especialmente se não passamos muito tempo com as crianças. No entanto, vou fazendo o que posso com aquilo que consigo arranjar. Digo isto porque em Timor não há muitos recursos, nada é fácil de conseguir.

I've told you that I love Montessori philosophy. I like the idea of organization and the independence that it brings to the children, I like the fact that they make their own discoveries in a meaningful context and I like the simplicity of it all. I love it as a teacher and even more as a mother.

But, regardless of what many blogs say, I don't think it's easy to implement a Montessori environment at home, especially if one doesn't have a lot of time to be with the kids. However, I do what I can with whatever I can find. I'm saying this because it's not easy to get anything here in Timor.

A solução é, obviamente, improvisar. Fazer brinquedos em casa, pensar bem nos brinquedos que se compram, procurar recursos na net, ler e aproveitar a experiência dos outros. Consegui alinhavar algumas ideias e adequar a nossa vida de casa ao objetivo de criar um ambiente Montessori. Não quero dizer que tudo é perfeito (longe disso) e que a Francisca e o Tomás fazem tudo como quero e como deve ser feito. Mas os recursos estão ali, os brinquedos estão minimamente organizados e pensados para eles e gosto de pensar que isso é uma mais-valia e que eles irão tirar algum proveito disso.

Temos a sorte de viver numa casa grande com espaço para criar uma sala de brincadeira para os bebés. Compramos uma estante baixa e larga para que tudo fique ao alcance deles e que serve de arrumação para brinquedos, jogos, livros e material de desenho.

My solution is, obviously, to improvise. Build some homemade toys, think about the toys I'm going to buy, look for free resources on the web and read and benefit from other people's experiences. I've managed to put some ideas together with the objective of creating a Montessori environment. I don't mean that everything is perfect (far from that) and that Francisca and Tomás do the tasks the way I want them to. But they have the resources, their toys are generally organized and age appropriated and I like to think that this is a value and they'll profit from it.

We're lucky to live in a big house that allows us to have a playroom for the toddlers. We bought a low shelf so that they can reach all the materials and it's used to store toys, games, books and drawing material.

Brinquedos e jogos | Toys and games

Uma parte da estante serve para guardar os brinquedos e os jogos de madeira. Os jogos que são de cartão, como os puzzles, ficam guardados em caixas de plástico, assim como os enfiamentos e os pauzinhos. Noutra prateleira ficam os puzzles de madeira.

Os carrinhos, os animais de plástico e o material de plasticina ficam guardados em caixas abertas de plástico. Quando querem utilizar algum destes materiais, tiram a caixa e levam-na para a mesa.

One side of the shelf is used to keep the wooden toys and games. Card games are kept in plastic boxes as well as the craft sticks and threading material. The wooden puzzles are stored in another shelf.

Small toys, such as cars and animals, stay in open plastic boxes. This way they can carry the box to play at the table.

Livros | Books

Os livros ocupam outra parte da estante e estão divididos de uma forma muito simples, por tamanhos (contra a minha formação profissional). Temos livros em português e inglês, na sua maioria cartonados e adequados à idade. No entanto, juntei alguns livros mais extensos que faziam parte da minha coleção antes de ser mãe.

Books are kept in another part of the shelf and they're organized by size (which goes against my professional believes).we have books in Portuguese and in English and most of them are made with strong paper and are age appropriate. I also introduced some more extensive books that I've bought before becoming a mom.

Material de desenho | Drawing material

Temos sempre papel à mão. Algum é comprado e de melhor qualidade e outro são folhas de rascunho. Uma lata pintada serve para arrumar os lápis de cor. Gostava de ter outra forma de guardar o papel mas para já fica em cima da estante. Também temos autocolantes variados para colar nos desenhos, se bem que normalmente acabam por ficar espalhados pelo chão. E não raras vezes o papel fica de lado e são as paredes que são pintadas.

We always have paper around. Some of it is bought and some is reused. A spray painted can is used to keep the color pencils. I'd like to find another way to store the paper but for now it stays on top of the shelf. There are also several stickers to put in the drawings but they usually end up stuck on the floor.  And there're some times when they forget about the paper and draw on the walls.

Neste espaço temos ainda uma mesa com duas cadeiras, um saco grande para guardar outros brinquedos e uma caixa de legos gigantes.

Varinha arco-íris | Rainbow wand

A Francisca e o Tomás fizeram 3 anos! Não é fácil escolher um tema para a festa deles por serem menina e menino. Este ano escolhi o arco-íris e fiz estas varinhas com fitas para oferecer aos coleguinhas da escola. Foram um sucesso! Acho que é uma ótima ideia, fácil de fazer, bonita e divertida para quem a recebe. Usei sete fitas com as cores do arco-íris mas a cor pode ser adaptada a vários temas.
Para fazer a varinha precisei de:
- pauzinhos chineses de bambu
- fitas de seda (30 cm de comprimento)
- fita-cola colorida/washi tape (esta às bolinhas fui eu que fiz com papel e fita-cola dupla)

It was Francisca and Tomás's third birthday this week! it's not easy to find a theme that fits both boy and girl. This year I picked the rainbow as a theme and I made some bibbon wand to give to the kids at school. It was a success! I think they're a great idea, easy to make, pretty and fun for the one who gets it. I used seven ribbons with the colors of the rainbow mas you can adapt the color to any theme.
To make the wands I used:
- bamboo chopsticks
- color ribbons (30 cm long)
- color tape/washi tape (I made this dotted tape using double-side tape)

1. Retira-se a parte de trás da fita-cola.

1. Remove the back of the tape.

2. Colam-se as fitas pela ordem do arco-íris.

2. Stick the ribbons in the rainbow order.

3. Enrola-se a fita-cola à volta de uma das extremidades do pauzinho.

3. Put the tape around one of the sides of the chopstick.

Brinquedos artesanais | Handmade toys

Gosto muito de brinquedos de madeira e ainda mais quando se conjugam com tecidos naturais. Fiz este jogo com pauzinhos de madeira e Velcro para fazer figuras. Os cartões são um download gratuito do blogue tried and true. Imprimi a imagem que está no saco na impressora diretamente no tecido. Se querem saber como se faz, espreitem aqui.

I really love wooden toys and I love them even more if they come together with natural fiber fabrics. I made this  building game with craft sticks and Velcro. Como fazer um saco em 30 minutos | How to sew a bag in 30 minutes

Para quem está a aprender a costurar, este é um bom projeto para experimentar. É fácil de fazer, não precisa de muita experiência e o resultado é muito bom.

For those who are learning to sew, this is a good Project to try. It´s easy to make, you don't need to have much experience and it makes a really nice tote bag.

Este é o material necessário para fazer este saco de criança que pode ser adaptado, bastando para isso alterar as medidas:

- dois retângulos  de cores diferentes com cerca de 45x18 cm

- uma fita resistente e larga que sirva de alça (a minha tinha cerca de 50 cm)

This is the material needed for a kids bag, but the sizes can be altered to make a larger bag:

- two different color rectangles with 45x18 cm

- one piece of large ribbon to make the strap (mine had about 50 cm)

. Colocam-se os dois tecidos juntos com o lado de fora virado para dentro;

  Put the fabrics together with the right sides facing;

. No meio dos tecidos coloca-se a fita na diagonal presa com alfinetes;

  In the middle of the fabrics pin the ribbon in a diagonal;

. Cosem-se as duas extremidades do retângulo, deixando uma abertura para virar numa das partes;

  Sew the two smaller sides of the rectangle and leave a small opening to turn the bag right side;

. Agora que temos uma espécie de tubo, juntamos as partes iguais dos tecidos e cosemos as laterais mais compridas do retângulo (é necessário ter cuidado para não coser a alça no sítio errado);

  Now that we have a kind of tube, match the fabrics and sew the long sides of the triangle;

. Vira-se o saco do lado direito;

  Turn the bag right side out;

. A parte do tecido que foi pensada para o interior vai para dentro da parte exterior;

  Put the inner fabric inside the exterior fabric;

. Vincam-se as dobras com o ferro de engomar e cose-se a parte de cima de forma a tapar a abertura que se deixou;

  Press and sew around the top edge to close de opening.

O saco é reversível. Pode ser usado dos dois lados. Espero que gostem! ♥
